Umpire Coordinator
Job Description
1. Works with each of the coaches under the
direct supervision of the “Sport Advisor”/ “Region Director.”
2. Oversee umpire development.
3. Recruit, coordinate, and train observers
(evaluators) in Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, and Utah.
4. Communicate with coaches and Athletic Directors, collect evaluations from coaches after every series, and act as a sounding board.
5. Listen to concerns, complaints, and recommendations with the ability to make changes if necessary.
6. Serve as the conference “rules interpreter” and communicate with the NCAA and NJCAA office if necessary.
7. Provide each coach with a rule book and other supplemental information each year, as well as keeping the coaches and umpires updated on changes regarding rules, philosophies and mechanics.
8. Attend the fall off season and spring coaches meeting (prior to the regional tournament), and spring Athletic Directors meeting. (Expense to the Fall coaches meeting will be paid by the Region. The host institution of the Region Baseball and Softball Tournament will provide the SWAC Umpire Coordinator with a room.
9. Handle reports on ejections by being the one responsible for the submitting copies to the appropriate Athletic Directors and Regional Directors.
10. Handle the disciplining of umpires if necessary or initiating assignment changes at the request or recommendation of the Sport Advisor.
11. Coordinate assignments with Assigners and together determine a)Who’s qualified to work? And b) Who needs to remediate?
12. Receives each schedule directly from the schools, creates a master assignment list for the entire conference and disperses to the appropriate assigner (coaches would still continue to communicate with their respective asssigner).
13. Develop and maintain an umpire section on th SWAC website.
14. Tabulates evaluations at the end of the season for consideration and selection of umpires, working the post season tournament.
15. Helps with post season selections as directed, functions as the “non working” Umpire-in-Chief at the tournament overseeing and further evaluating the umpires working the tournament.
16. Establishes a conference umpire roster with the assigners help.
17. Sends out letters to the umpires who have been re-hired, asking for availabilities to be
sent to the appropriate assigner.
Note: Region will pay the Umpire Coordinator the sum of $100/each SWAC baseball and softball institution. The region will pay the Assigner the sum of $100/ each SWAC baseball and softball institution.
